2009 Usborne Reach for Stars Reading Program Coming September 21st!

This year, we have decided to have the first annual TESA Read-a-Thon. We will be kicking the event off on September 21!  Each reader will be challenged to read at least 300 minutes and record what they read in their own reading folder.

Then, we'll have a TESA Double Dare challenge asking each student to find 10 people to support their reading efforts with a $10 contribution.  That $100 will buy $50 worth of books for the student and $60 worth of books for their classroom.  The program will also include prizes and awards as well!

Reading Folders will be sent home with your student, Monday, September 21st.  The folders will contain everything you need, from the log to record your minutes on to the instructions.  Students will be able to check out the catalog (to create a personal wish list from) on a nightly basis.

Here are some tips to encourage reading in your own home:

1.  Set aside a time each day for reading.  Consider adding this time to your evening routine - in addition to any bedtime reading you might do together.  Try a half hour after dinner each night when kids are alert.

2.  Fill your home with all kinds of printed materials. The presence of newspapers, magazines, and books all increase levels of literacy in the home.

3.  Find a great book for yourself and model reading for pleasure and information to your children.

4.  Don't stop reading aloud to your kids even when they are reading to themselves.

Above all, make reading fun and help your little readers make picking up a book a lifetime habit.

Thank you for your time and support making our Read-a-Thon a success!  If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me.
